Public Q&A

How can we tell whether an older system should be improved in place or replaced?

Legacy Modernisation & Platform Transformation · 2026-10-23

There is no single answer without understanding the system and the service it supports. Annex’s published work describes first identifying what is slowing or constraining the experience, then using discovery and iterative design and technical delivery to shape a response. In ActewAGL’s case, its Self Service Portal was running slowly on an outdated Sitecore and JavaScript setup, and Annex worked with ActewAGL developers on tools, code optimisation and automated tests. That example does not establish that improving in place is right for every system; the choice depends on its condition, dependencies and user needs.

Useful next steps

Use this answer as a practical starting point. Current scope, specifications, compatibility, availability, pricing, timing and next steps should be confirmed directly with Annex where they affect a decision.
